AbstractThe losses arising from energy-transfer-upconversion effects are derived as a function of mode-to-
pump ratio in end-pumped Nd-doped lasers. The optimum mode-to-pump ratio with and without the energy-
transfer-upconversion taking the thermally induced diffraction losses into account is investigated. The results
show that the optimum mode-to-pump ratio with the upconversion effects is less than that in which the energy-
transfer-upconversion effects are neglected. The theoretical model is applied to a diode-end-pumped
Nd:GdVO4 laser operating at 1342 nm. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimen-
tal results.
