AbstractThe use of the cobalt carbonyl phosphine complex Co2(CO)6(PR3)2 enables the synthesis of N-ben-
zylaniline from N-benzylideneaniline at an acceptable yield. The main by-products are aniline and toluene. The
effects of the concentrations of from N-benzylideneaniline, cobalt, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen on the reac-
tion rate are found. The mechanism of the catalytic reaction is proposed. The equilibrium constant and the
enthalpies of pre-equilibrium steps, and the rate constant and the activation energy of a rate-limiting step were
determined at 155, 170, 185, and 200°C.
