AbstractThe defects in undoped and RE-doped LiYF4 crystals have been studied by using electron probe
microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and local cathodoluminescence. An attempt has been undertaken
to relate the generation of structural defects, such as YF3 and LiF phase precipitation and deviation from sto-
ichiometry in the course of crystallization, to the crystal-growth technique and physicochemical conditions of
crystal growth from melt. The distribution of RE activators along the crystal length and diameter has been deter-
mined, and the influence of defects on the luminescence spectra of RE ions has been established.
