AbstractThe hydrolysis of the Fe3+ cation into polynuclear hydroxo complexes is studied in the presence of
Cl
, Cl
, N
, and S
anions. N
and Cl anions do not exert any considerable effect on the hydrolytic
polymerization of Fe3+. Raising the ionic strength of the solution by introducing NaClO4 increases the concen-
tration of polynuclear hydroxo complexes. This finding is in agreement with theory. The effect of S
anions
on the hydrolysis of the Fe3+ cation into polynuclear hydroxo complexes is governed to a considerable extent
by the concentration of these anions: at concentrations below 104 mol/l, S
anions exert no effect on the
formation of polynuclear iron(III) hydroxo complexes; at S
concentrations of 5
104 to 1
102 mol/l,
large particles that can be settled by centrifugation form in the solution; and when the concentration of S
ions is above 101 mol/l, they prevent the polymerization of the hydrolyzed species Fe(OH
.
