AbstractThe radial distribution functions of aqueous solutions of erbium chloride determined from X-ray
diffraction data in a broad range of concentrations under standard temperature and pressure were analyzed using
the simulation approach. Based on the identified optimal models of structural units for the systems under study,
it was found that the coordination number of erbium ion in concentrated and saturated solutions is close to six
and increases to eight as solutions are diluted. A reduction in concentration causes the formation of a second
coordination sphere around the cation and the formation of a first hydration sphere for the anion. All the systems
contain non-contact ion associates.
