Abstract—This article reviews the results of exploration of occurrences of natural salts (salt lakes and salt
deposits) in the USSR and the Russian Federation and also investigation of water–salt systems, containing nat-
ural salts and modeling natural processes of salt formation, that were performed in 1950–2010 by Academician
Kurnakov’s disciples and followers from the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and a
number of other research institutions.
