AbstractScales of the lateral line (Sll) in representatives of the order Pleuronectiformes were studied, and its
large morphological diversity was revealed. It was shown that Sll early in ontogenesis reach a definitive struc-
ture and have an insignificant individual variation. In some cases, features of Sll are species specific, but the
main distinctions in its structure are typical of taxa of the supraspecies rank. Types of structure of Sll, as well
as tendencies in its specialization, are distinguished.
