Abstract— The Ru-catalyzed annulation reaction of m-substituted aromatic ketones with diphenylacetylene to prepare polysubstituted naphthalene derivatives was reported. m-Substituted aromatic ketones have two different ortho C–H bonds; the experimental results and theoretical calculation both illustrate that m-substituted aromatic ketones use less hindered C–H bond to participate in the cyclization. The method has the advantages of forming two new carbon-carbon bonds in one single step, wide substrates tolerance, and mild reaction conditions.
