Abstract— This review is devoted to the history of studying calcium aluminate Ca₁₂Al₁₄O₃₃, including its unique structure, which corresponds to a non-stoichiometric garnet. Depending on the crystal lattice defects, the features of this structure determine the appearance of a whole spectrum of unique properties. The use of a number of them is also described in the review.
