AbstractThe biomass and distribution of underground organs in main plant communities growing in the
southern steppe zone of the Buryat Republic were analyzed comparatively. The greatest amounts of under-
ground biomass proved to be accumulated in the following communities: sawwortFilifoliumsheeps fescue
(2490.08 g/m2), wormwoodfeather grasssheeps fescue (1830.8 g/m2), and cinquefoilfeather grasssheeps
fescue (1542.24 g/m2). The chemical composition of underground phytomass is described.
