Abstract—The biomass and distribution of underground organs in main plant communities growing in the
southern steppe zone of the Buryat Republic were analyzed comparatively. The greatest amounts of under-
ground biomass proved to be accumulated in the following communities: sawwort–Filifolium–sheep’s fescue
(2490.08 g/m2), wormwood–feather grass–sheep’s fescue (1830.8 g/m2), and cinquefoil–feather grass–sheep’s
fescue (1542.24 g/m2). The chemical composition of underground phytomass is described.
