Well, what is this parvenu of sciences, which seems to be a col-
lection of facts without any theory and which obviously suffers
from excessive observation and the lack of principles to classify
the data observed? And is there such a science, ecology, at all?

Abstract—More than 60 definitions of the concept of ecology are analyzed. It is concluded that the notions of
ecology are clearly divided into three groups: biological, sociological, and mixed.
