Abstract—Under the effect of winter–spring drought, pine forests can come into the “focal state,” which results
from the partial loss of feeding roots. Its physiological basis consists in permanent water stress experienced by
trees. The survival of nun moth on these trees sharply increases, its abundance increases, and this leads to pop-
ulation outbreaks in this pest. These outbreaks cease upon the recovery of root systems in pines.
