Abstract—Critical review of the use of the term “haulout” is presented, and its interpretation as a topographi-
cally limited area of the supralittoral zone with a known type of its use by a pinniped species is proposed. The
procedure for identification of haulouts is considered. An example of a spotted seal haulout in Peter the Great
Bay of the Sea of Japan was used to show the type of its use by the seals; the scheme of description of a haulout
is presented.
