Determination of the Shape of Colloidal Particles
by Electrooptical Methods

Abstract—Two novel methods for studying particle shape in colloids and suspensions are developed. It was
shown that electrooptical studies in rotating or linear fields supplemented by the data on the relaxation of the
electrooptical effect make it possible to determine the ratio of the particle semi-axis approximated by the ellip-
soids of revolution. Using aqueous dispersions of diamond, anisaldasine, and palygorskite, it was demonstrated
that the parameters of particle shape obtained by these methods are in good agreement with the results of elec-
tron microscopy measurements.
