and Its Premicellar Association in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract—Interfacial tensions of aqueous solutions of fluorinated nonionic surfactant [poly(ethylene glycol)
fluorohexyl ether] were precisely measured under adsorption equilibrium at 293 K within a wide concentration
range. Premicellar association of the surfactant was revealed in the concentration range below CMC, the pre-
associates formed being trimers. Increments of the free energy required to transfer the fluoromethylene group
from an aqueous solution to the interface with fluorodecalin, into the submicelle (trimer) of a nonionic surfac-
tant as well as into the fluorocarbon core of a micelle were estimated. Two-dimensional condensation in
adsorbed layers of surfactant at the water–perfluorodecalin interface was disclosed.
