Abstract—Results of complex physicochemical, crystallochemical, and rheological studies of aqueous mont-
morillonite dispersions are summarized. The role of modifier (bis-quaternary and tertiary-quarternary ammo-
nium salts) nature in the formation and strengthening of thixotropic disperse systems is established. Some
assumptions on the mechanism of interaction of these cationic surfactants with the surface of the dispersed
phase of montmorillonite suspensions are made; the observed effects of thixotropic strengthening are
explained.
