Abstract—The possibility of the modification of a cellulose acetate membrane upon adsorption of ionic sur-
factants, cetyl pyridinium chloride and sodium dodecyl sulphate has been investigated on the basis of mem-
brane potential studies. For the estimation of the extent of adsorption, surface tension measurements were car-
ried out in the presence and absence of cellulose acetate membrane using surfactant solutions of variable com-
positions. The results have also been used for the characterization of the thermodynamic equilibrium, which the
membrane surfactant system attains upon surfactant adsorption, in terms of the immobilization constant.
