Investigation of a Prolonged Chromospheric Flare

AbstractA magnitude 2 flare is studied in the H
, H
, H
, and H Ca II lines using spectra obtained on the
echelle spectrograph of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The flare was observed September 1, 1990,
from 5h41m to 7h35m UT in the penumbra of a spot. A series of semi-empirical models corresponding to various
times in the development of the flare are calculated using non-LTE code. The results of these calculations show
that the density of the chromospheric layers was higher than the density corresponding to hydrostatic equilib-
rium. The extent of the chromospheric flare in height at the time of maximum did not exceed 1000 km. It is
possible to jointly interpret the profiles of all four lines at the flare maximum only by assuming the presence of
a thin hot layer in the upper photosphere.
