On Cosmic Bursts in Various Spectral Ranges

AbstractIt is proposed that the absence of gamma-ray bursts at relatively low energies (E
5 keV) is asso-
ciated with the difference in the energy spectra of the burst and background emission. Extrapolation of the burst
spectra to lower energies (down to radio wavelengths) indicates that the background intensity dominates the
burst intensity. This makes simultaneous observation of bursts at gamma-ray energies (E
5 keV) and in softer
spectral ranges difficult. An exception is the ultraviolet, where the cosmic background intensity should be
extremely low. Observation of bursts in the ultraviolet could help elucidate the nature of gamma-ray bursts.
Recording bursts in other energy ranges requires very high angular resolution.
