Selecting a Reference Catalog for Reduction
of the Carte du Ciel Plates

Abstract—Systematic differences between the ACRS and PPM catalog proper motions, which exceed
0.5/(100 yr) for some declination zones, are discussed. Some of these differences are likely due to errors in the
PPM. It is proposed to reduce the Astrographic Catalog (AC) plates obtained as part of the international Carte
du Ciel project using the ACRS as a reference catalog, since the ACRS is independent of the AC and has lower
systematic proper-motion errors.
