Normal Modes of the Sun, Including the 11-Year Cycle

Abstract—The possibility that ultra-low-frequency oscillations can be trapped in the core of the Sun is exam-
ined. The differentially rotating solar core is shown to be a Rossby oscillation resonator. The lower boundary
of this resonator is at the center of the core, while the upper boundary corresponds to the base of the convection
zone. Eigenfunctions and a set of eigenfrequencies for this resonator are calculated with asymptotic theory. In
a modern model of the Sun, 11-year oscillations with sufficiently low wavelengths are shown to be normal
modes of the core, offering an explanation of the cyclicity of solar activity.
