Abstract—It is shown that the quasistationary energy flux into the solar corona needed to provide coronal
energy balance is associated primarily with Alfven-type perturbations and is proportional to the magnetic field
at the base of the corona. The mechanism for regulation of the solar wind mass flux is considered. It is shown
that this regulation is provided by strong coupling of the mass flow and the inner corona, including regions in
the immediate proximity of the transition layer.
