On Saddle-like Structures in the Solar Corona

Abstract—The saddle-like structures visible in some soft X-ray solar images obtained by the Yohkoh satellite
are discussed. There is a small coronal hole with contours shaped in a star or cross at the center of such struc-
tures. Coronal saddles originate in a magnetic configuration with a high degree of symmetry, namely, a quadru-
polar configuration. Comparison with models indicates that the open lines in these holes cannot be modeled
using a source surface.
