Direction Finding of a Source in an Acoustic Waveguide and the Angular Resolution Limit

Abstract—A reduced-rank adaptive algorithm is constructed, which makes it possible to find sound sources directions using a horizontal array operating in a waveguide with inaccurately known parameters. Statistical simulation results are presented, demonstrating the high resolution of the method and acceptable accuracy in bearing estimation without the prior knowledge of the source ranges and depths. The Smith criterion is used to find the theoretical limit of the angular resolution as a function of the input signal-to-noise ratio and size of the input sampling.
